2020 member meeting launches consequential year ahead

Discussions around consent, leave no trace, volunteers and the Sacramento Playa Art Park highlight a full agenda for Sacramento Valley Spark members at the 2020 membership meeting.

Held Jan. 18 at the Atrium, 7300 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento, the meeting kicked off with an interactive art ice breaker where teams coordinated to draw depictions of the 10 principles of Burning Man. Other topics of discussion included 2019 successes, areas for improvement, and the 2020 calendar.

Successes listed by the group included:  Leave No Trace activities, Summer Spark, Playa Academy, Board transparency and inclusion/communication, Facebook consistency in communication, an art workshop, Repping burners at the Crocker Art Mix, Spark the Dark Burners On Broadway, Groundwork for the Playa Art Park, and collaboration with Upcycle POP.

Suggested improvements were to improve communication through the SVS website, Facebook and email to make sure that interested parties can hear about the efforts; develop a clear way of structuring grants to artists, and adding membership benefits (perhaps with early ticket sales to events in addition to lower ticket costs).

With multiple activities in the hopper, Ed gave brief overviews on each – Playa Academy (May 1-3), Playa Art Park (tentatively opening November, 2020), Summer Spark (July 25th) and Spark The Dark (winter solstice, 2020).  More information on all these events can be found on the website and Facebook.

Thomas Hall verbally explained the SVS finances, and this information has also been since shared on Facebook.

Running short on time, rather than have breakout groups, Ed led brief discussions on four topics: Consent and SVS’s role on the topic; MOOP Your City and what success looks like, Playa Art Park resource brainstorm; and developing a more comprehensive system for volunteers. All topics could have used more time, so we will be setting up additional meetings for particular projects or topics.

The SVS board appreciates your feedback, whether it was in person or virtually. We will take all the conversation to heart as we continue forward with great things for the community in 2020!
