FAQs

Q: What is the goal of this event?

A: Artists will share their skills and teach community members. This is not Burning Man theme camp based, but art based – a preparation for the Playa.

Q: When is Playa Academy?

A: May 10 – 12, 2019. Rain or shine. Friday entry for early set-up at noon, first session Friday evening from 7pm to 9pm. Gates closed from 10pm to 6am Saturday. First session on Saturday is at 9am, with three sessions throughout the day – ending at 7pm. Again, gates closed at 10pm until 6am Sunday. One Sunday session from 8am to 10am (to allow for LNT and spending some Mother’s Day time with loved ones).

Q: What does it cost?

A: The entry fee is $25. A presale will be set up soon to allow prepayment of the entry fee along with selection of the workshops you want to attend. Artists/presenters who hold at least one training session will be comped the entry fee.

Q: How is the reimbursement for materials used in the workshops being handled?

A: Attendees will be asked to preselect the workshops they are interested in so that tokens can be issued and artists/presenters have a chance to make sure enough supplies to meet the demand are provided. Tokens will be in $5 increments. If a workshop requires no tokens, that indicates it is a demo only. In that case, the participants can watch, but will not be taking a finished product home.

Q: How many people can attend?

A: Site capacity is 200.

Q: Is there overnight camping?

A: Overnight camping is free with admission, with assigned placement to artists/presenters. There are no services for RV camping, though RVs are allowed to “dry” camp.

Q: Will there be porta-potties?

A: Yes. They will be delivered and picked up full. No onsite service of portos will be provided. The portos will have battery lights inside for nighttime safety, and porta-potty guardians will make sure they are stocked with toilet paper.

Q: Is this a Leave No Trace event?

A: Silly question, but of course it is. We are burners. There will be recycle areas, and pick sticks and trash bags available where needed. Everyone is expected to honor this important principle.

Q: Is there water onsite?

A: Yes. Both hot and cold outdoor shower (no privacy) is also available.

Q: Are there facilities to prepare food:

A: There are two microwaves, one full size refrigerator with freezer, two BBQ grills, one two-burner propane stove with hot plate onsite. Other camping stoves will be provided by attendees. A sink is available for washing and prep. There are 14 6’ foot picnic tables and six 6’ flat tables; about 12 plastic chairs.

Q: Do we cook for ourselves or are there group meals?

A: We are self reliant! The limited kitchen area (described above) can be used for food prep. Campers are allowed to prepare meals in their camping area. Theme camps are welcome to provide meals and ask for camp donations as a sub-fundraiser. There will be a community potluck for the Saturday dinner. We expect there will be food trucks in the parking lot also.

Q: Is Playa Academy family friendly?

A: Yes. Children under 12 free with parent or guardian.

Q: Is alcohol allowed?

A: Participants must be 21 years or older to drink alcohol. Gifting of alcohol is allowed, but proper ID must be shown.

Q: Is there a place for fire flow art?

A: Yes. There is a large parking area and some open space available. Spotters and proper safety equipment required.

Q: Can we burn in a fire pit?

A: Yes. There is an open ring fire pit that can be used. Firewood TBD, but most likely there will be scrap wood available to burn.

Q: Is there an emergency plan?

A: A team of people will be available with walkie-talkies who can assist participants in case of emergency. There will be a first aid station located at the volunteer station on the kitchen deck, where there will also be a lost and found. The team will be on hand to coordinate with county fire or emergency assistance and evacuation. There will be fire extinguishers placed near the fire performance area, near burn barrels, kitchen, and workshop areas. Camping areas will be marked clearly to identify fire lanes.

Q: Are pets allowed?

A: NO.

Q: Is there shade?

A: There is a dock house that can be utilized as community space. Teaching areas will be shaded.

Q: Is smoking permitted?

A: No smoking on the dock or on the cottage deck, nor in or near session areas. Please be respectful. Bring an ashtray and leave no butts. Do not flick your butts into the pond.

Q: Can artists sell their work?

A: It is suggested the artist makes a voluntary donation to Sacramento Valley Spark for the opportunity to vend or sell their artwork.

Q: Can participants swim in the pond?

A: All participants must sign a release to allow swimming in the pond. Kayaks and blow up rafts are allowed. Nothing with a motor permitted. Please be respectful.

Q: Will the cottage be available for staff?

A: No. This is the owner’s private property, although the outdoor deck can be used.

Q: Are art cars allowed?

A: Yes, but they must remain parked.

Q: Will this be the best weekend of the year?

A: It depends on if you’re going to Burning Man…. but it’s gonna be pretty darn good!
