Sacramento nonprofit ‘Sparks’ litter removal

Sacramento Valley Spark volunteers joined others to honor Dr. Martin Luther King with a trash pickup of the boulevard.

Armed with grabber sticks and clad in Orange safety vests just over a dozen volunteers — most of them burners — collected 160 gallons of trash from along Sacramento’s Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard hours before the march commemorating the civil rights icons life reached the neglected blocks.
The MLK trash pickup — just days after one in Midtown Sacramento — represent Sacramento Valley Spark’s initial foray into to our larger goal of creating a citywide trash collection challenge Moop Your City.
“We’re excited about adding our energy to these community-driven activities, ” said Ed Fletcher, president of the nonprofit.
The Midtown and MLK trash pickup were lead by Reddit users, but SVS extended the efforts by adding participants and in the case of the Jan. 11 Midtown trash pickup created a “home base” with music and breakfast.
“It’s never to early to start making a movement,” said Fletcher, who also goes by “Major Sexy Pants.”
“Getting involved in these cleanups allows us to make friends, learn from practice and build momentum,” Fletcher said.
“Moop Your City” will invite teams to participates in a city-wide trash collection challenge. Our team is will be reaching out to corporate and community sponsors in the next several weeks to help us Moop Your City happen. Moop Your City is tentatively set for July 25 with a celebration for participants in Rancho Cordova. Participants will also receive a 3D printed grabber stick.
